Post Your Own Listing
If you have a lost pet or found a pet
in Dutchess County, NY,
you can now post your own listings.

 1  Be Cautious
First and foremost, be very cautious around the animal. Keep your children and other pets away from it.
 2  Use this Web Site
Be sure to post the found pet on this website. Once you register, you will get important phone numbers to call and will be able to print a poster (with our without a photo).

Search this website to see if the pet is already listed as lost. Click here to search. If you find the pet listed, contact the phone number shown. Lost cats can survive a very long time outside so if you see a cat on the site that was lost a year or two or more ago and it sounds like the cat you found, call the phone number anyway! You never know. You may have a match!

 3  Who to Contact
Contact the Animal Control Officer (ACO) in the Town where the animal was found. (Click here for a list of ACOs.) The ACO will come and get it. (Most ACOs do not pick up cats.) Try to find out where the ACO is taking the pet so if we locate the owner, we will know where to find it.

Important! Call the Poughkeepsie Journal. They will post an ad for 4 days free of charge for a "found" pet. This is a great way to get the word out that the pet was found.

If you have found a cat and wish to have the DCSPCA take it, you must first call them to set up an appointment. If they do not have room for the cat, ask to be placed on their waitlist. If you get on their waitlist and are unable to keep the cat until they can take it, you may have a find a relative or friend to "foster" it. If you find a home for it, please be sure the home is a loving and safe one. Post the cat on this website and in the Journal before you give the cat away so the owner has time to claim it. If the cat is not spayed/neutered, please consider getting it done. Ask the DCSPCA about doing it. You should also go to FriendsofAnimals.org on the Internet to obtain a Spay/Neuter Certificate that greatly reduces the cost and gives you a list of Vets in the area who honor these certificates. There are a couple of Vets who also include some shots. Anything you can do to help reduce the stray cat population is GREATLY appreciated.

 4  Post Flyers
If you wish to help find the owner, post flyers in the area where you found the pet. See If You've Lost a Pet for additional things you can do.
